November 2008 Message:

Each year the Needles Elks Lodge has a coloring contest for the Kindergarten classes in the local schools with prizes are awarded. Each first place winner receives a prize. One class is awarded the Grand Prize for best class participation. I would like to thank the following businesses for their donations:  Bashas', Dairy Queen, and McDonald's.

This year we are also giving each Third Grade Student in our local school district a copy of the Webster's Student Dictionary of their own to use and keep throughout their school years.

Every member of our Lodge should be proud of what we are able to do for the Children of Needles!

ALCOHOL         "Booze, sauce, brew, hooch, hard stuff, juice"
August 2008 Message

Know the law before you risk it. It is illegal to buy or posses alcohol under the age of 21. Alcohol is a Drug. Mixing it with other drugs can be extremely dangerous. It affects your brain by loss of coordination and poor judgment. Slowed reflexes, distorted vision, memory loss and sometimes blackouts.
Alcohol is a depressant, or downer because it reduces brain activity. If you are already depressed it can make you feel worse. Alcohol can cause damage to the liver, vomiting, fainting and heart problems. (Did you know that a 12 ounce bottle of beer or a 5 ounce glass of wine has as much alcohol as a 1.5 ounces of liquor?)
Please watch out for the warning signs: Getting drunk on a regular basis, frequent hangovers, depression, forgetting what you do while drinking, or blacking out. As we all know its hard to help someone who says they don’t have a drinking problem but maybe with a word from their friends might slow things down. We would all like to keep our friends around for as long as possible. Remember there is nothing wrong with a social drink but know your limits.
If you have too much to drink, DON’T DRIVE!!

Drugs: It’s everyone’s Problem!
July 2008 Message

Our teens today believe that prescription drugs are “safer than street drugs.” What they don’t know is that more teens are dying from prescription drug overdose than amphetamines, heroin and cocaine combined. Teenagers are moving away from street drugs and using prescription medication to get high. Next to marijuana, prescription drug abuse is the most common form of drug abuse among today’s teens. Nine percent of teenagers say that using prescription drugs is an important part of fitting in with their friends. One third of teens believe that there is “nothing wrong” with using prescription drugs “once in a while.” We as parents need to sit down and discuss with our children of all ages, the repercussion of taking any kind of unauthorized drugs.
